There are 29 locks on the Mississippi River above Saint Louis.  

Melvin Price Locks and Dam at East Alton, IL

We pass one of the massive lock and dam systems at East Alton, Illinois.  This particular lock and dam at Est Alton was completed in 1994 and is one of the 1,200' locks.  This explains the huge barge configurations we've been seeing on the river.
